You don't always know when or where you or someone in your family will experience an unexpected allergic reaction. Knowing the common symptoms and triggers is the first step in helping to protect you and your family.

Unexpected allergic reactions affect everyone differently. They can include one or a number of these common symptoms:

  • Itchy, watery eyes
  • Sneezing,
  • Runny nose
  • Sinus congestion
  • Coughing
  • Itchy throat
  • Hives, rashes or itchy skin

Unexpected allergic reactions can arise from a variety of different causes, including:

  • Insects — Mosquitoes, bees and wasps; any insect that bites
  • Pets —Friends with pets or a school trip to a petting zoo or farm
  • Trees and plant — Pollen, ragweed or grass
  • Poisonous plants — Poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac
  • Detergents and perfumes — Laundry detergent, household cleaners, strong scents and perfume
  • Dust & dust mites — At home or away from home; mattresses, pillows, sleeping bags, stuffed animals, drapery and carpeting
  • Mould — Indoor and outdoor humid areas; books, shoes and bedding
  • Jewellery — Watches, rings, earrings, bracelets or necklaces that contain nickel
